XUAN paper - which type to choose?

Where did the name of the Xuan paper come from?

Types of Xuan Paper:

Shengxuan raw paper 生 宣

It is uncured rice paper, also known as "raw". This paper is very absorbent, very strongly absorbs ink and water. It has a slightly rough texture. Due to the ability to spread the ink, raw paper is recommended for traditional Chinese calligraphy and for painting  写意 Xiěyì and水墨画 Shuǐmòhuà.

Finished paper shuxuan  熟 宣


This paper is not as absorbent anymore i  does not "spread" the ink,  because it is pre-coated with chemical solutions_cc781905-5cde-136d_T5cde-136bad-bb3bura is quite smooth . This type of paper is best for fine painting and fine calligraphy.


Semi-finished paper banshuxuan 半熟 宣

You can also find medium fine rice paper, which combines the features of both of the above: it is still absorbent, but much less diffusive than the raw paper.
